Here are some of my graphite drawings. I draw from photographs (like Lee Hammond does). I do not have the source files for every drawing here but wanted to show you the finished drawings even if I did them a while ago.
During the learning process and reading Lee's book, I learned that I was supposed to draw "what I saw" not "what I thought I saw." I thought I WAS doing that, but then I ran across some pictures I drew when I was younger.
Duh. I'm not posting them here because I don't want to embarrass myself. Lips don't look like that! Teeth don't have dark outlines around them. The whole iris doesn't show in someone's eye...okay, I get it now. Once I started drawing what I saw, I couldn't believe how much better my drawings got! Yours will, too.

Baby from a Magazine |

I don't have the source file for this
picture I drew. I was in the hospital
on 01/01/01 and this was on the
cover
of a magazine by my bed.
I felt a little like this baby at
the
moment, so I drew him.

Here is the source photo for Brentwood Elementary, as well as some in-progress drawings I took pictures of along the way. It was something fun to do while I waited in the car pickup line after school every day.
I actually did this as a gift for my daughter's teacher and they surprised me by printing it as the first page in their yearbook! Sometimes when you print pencil drawings, they don't always do the pictures justice. I couldn't be happier with the way it looked in the yearbook. Wow! What a surprise!

Here's the source drawing again...it's pretty easy drawing bricks. This is one of my favorite drawings.

Sorry, no source file for this one either.
I think I drew from a picture where he had his eyes closed anyway.
I will always remember when I was planning to go to a client's house and take source photographs for a portrait of their young son--the mom was all upset because the child had stumbled
and got a big 'ol gash on his
forehead.
I try not to laugh but gently tell them I won't draw the gash.
A similar thing happened when another client told me she was upset because she forgot to take him to the barber.
I "cut his hair" in the photograph just the way she wanted it--tapered on the sides and shorten his bangs.
All I had to do was erase
some
of the hair. LOL

Fisher was wearing his white Christening outfit, so I changed from the white lace
to a different collar in this drawing.

This is the first hand that I drew. It was kind of fun! Again, I just tried to draw
what I saw, not what I thought a hand should look like...and it worked.

In fact, it went so well, I thought what the heck--let's try drawing TWO hands
and two FEET!
Here are some closeup details of the
drawing for you, too.
